How to create your own blend

(a) Firstly decide what type of characteristics you want in your coffee.

(b) Once you have that, use the information in table 1 and table 2 to help you decide what coffee beans can be used to make your coffee.

(c) Now you have chosen the beans, click on the relevant bean bag and then select the percentage of that coffee you want in blend.

(d) All you now have to do is choose the Roasting style (use table 3 to make sure that the beans chosen can be roasted at your chosen style) and the grind you require.

Table 1 - Characteristics of coffee

  • Colombian - Heavy bodied, rich, solid
  • Guatemalan - Smooth, fruity, perfectly balanced
  • Ethiopian - Winey, aromatic
  • Mexican - Light, smooth bodied, medium acidity
  • Brazilian - neutral coffee, sweet, low-acidity, good blender
  • Kenyan - Bright, solid body, very fragrant
  • Tanzanian - Medium body, low- acidity, rounder taste
  • Old Java - Hearty, spicy
  • Indian - Dark chocolate, spice

Table 2 - Blending category

  • Big Classic Coffees - contribute body, acidity classic flavour and aroma to a blend - Guatemalan and Colombian
  • Other Classic coffees - good blenders, contribute body and acidity but not as mush as the Big Classics. Good base for a blend. When roasted darker, add sweetness and add chocolate tones - Mexican and Brazilian.
  • Highlight and Exotic coffees - add fruitiness or wine like tones - Ethiopian, Kenyan, Tanzanian
